The last railway in the Caribbean.
The track was laid in 1912 to bring cane down to the mill at Basseterre, and it never came up. Now double-deck carriages take the same line: ghaut bridges over the ravines, the windward coast on your right, Brimstone Hill rising on your left, and a choir singing on the open upper deck. Three hours, and the whole north of the island goes past the window.

Board at Needsmust, sit upstairs, and let eighteen miles of cane country do the work. Bridges over the ghauts, villages waving from the yards, rum punch poured somewhere around Sandy Point. Guides leave around seven because the summit clags in by midday. Wet season makes it slippery rather than impossible; go anyway, and take twice the water you think.

Across The Narrows
The Nevis day

Forty-five minutes of open water and the pace drops by half. Charlestown is a handful of streets, the plantation inns serve lunch under mahogany, and Pinney’s Beach runs four miles with almost nobody on it. Most tours pair the island circuit with beach time, which is exactly the right proportion.

Both islands change at five.
The last tender leaves Port Zante, the vendors fold their tables, and Basseterre goes back to being a small capital with a bandstand. That is when the beach bars on South Friars start their grills, when Cockleshell fills with people who live here, and when the sun drops behind Nevis Peak in roughly four minutes flat.
Goat water, saltfish, and rum by eleven.
The market ladies on Bay Road start before six and the plate that follows looks nothing like the resort menu. Add a rum shop crawl round Basseterre, or the coffee farm on Liamuiga’s lower slopes where the beans still dry on a tray in the yard.
The channel is the best road here.
The Narrows takes about forty minutes under sail and fifteen flat out on a powerboat. Snorkel the reef off Shitten Bay, anchor at Pinney’s for lunch, then run home with the trade wind pushing from behind.
Brimstone Hill was built to be seen.
Eight hundred feet of volcanic rock, a century of enslaved labour cutting and hauling the stone, and cannon still pointed at an invasion that came anyway in 1782. Below it sit Romney Manor’s gardens and the batik workshop under a saman tree four hundred years old. This is the half day that explains everything else you will see on the island.

Six hours in port, spent well.
Port Zante puts you a five-minute walk from the taxi stand and about forty minutes from anywhere on St Kitts. These all fit inside a tender day with room to spare, and every one of them has you back at the gangway well before all aboard.

You will not get round everything, and you do not need to. This is the order that works when the trip is short and the ferry timetable is what it is.

The panoramic circuit puts the whole map in your head: Timothy Hill where the Atlantic and the Caribbean nearly touch, Romney Manor’s gardens, Brimstone Hill from the top terrace. Commit nothing else until you have done it.

Liamuiga’s crater is a four-hour climb through rainforest with a rope for the last pitch, and the summit clouds over by noon. If that is not your morning, take the sugar train and keep the day flat and shaded.

The boat out of Basseterre lands you in Charlestown, which is smaller and slower than anywhere on St Kitts. Plantation inn lunch, an hour at Pinney’s Beach, back on the late crossing with the peak behind you.
